GPP = General Physical Preparedness In this brief article I will explain what GPP means to us and our members at CrossFit RNA Cambridge. For a more in-depth explanation refer to the pdf attached and imbedded below this article. This concept of needing a base level of fitness, a non-specialized training program, is often referred to as general physical preparedness (GPP). For us specializing is something that should be left to elite athletes (I am not saying elite athletes wouldn’t benefit from GPP), the need for your average athlete (you!) to be for example able to run a marathon is too specialist, the physical demands are too high in one area and unfavourable in other areas, for example stamina and endurance will be high on the priority list at the loss of power, strength, speed, flexibility and coordination, with some degree of performance gains in agility, balance and accuracy. This need to move long distances at slow speed (marathon running) is the opposite of what we believe human function is about, to us it’s working towards gaining the broadest and most general fitness possible. That means gaining physical adaption’s in endurance, stamina, speed, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance and accuracy (general physical skills) but not at the cost of another. Please don’t take this as the Holy Grail you can of course compete in specialist activities but part of you training should very much be GPP. One of the best crossfit strap lines is “prepare not only for the unknown but for the unknowable” this means be ready for life and all the physical adaptations. Within the crossfit express Cambridge and crossfit community we produce an unmatched GPP in beginner, intermediate, and advanced athletes regardless of their prior training and sport. What this means is no matter what prior level of fitness and skill you have we can make it (YOU!) better. Our programming and classes (WODs) are scalable for all levels which means everyone can attend.
